Hawk soccer drops first region game to Juan Diego
4-9-08

MT. PLEASANT—The North Sanpete soccer team dropped a heartbreaking 1-0 decision to the visiting Juan Diego Soaring Eagle in the first region game of the year.
The two teams were evenly matched throughout the affair, but when Juan Diego’s Rouzbeh Mirhosseina found the back of the net with a right-footed shot early in the first half, it put the visiting Soaring Eagle in the lead, where they remained for the rest of the game.
North Sanpete had several good chances to score in both the first and second half, with John Bundy, Hector Serrano, Francisco Contreras, and Jordon Merrill all testing Juan Diego keeper Cory Phibeault.
The visiting goalie was up to the task, and the defense in front of him helped to clear the ball from the surrounding area before the Hawks could mount any concerted attacks.
Sanpete goal minder Brigham Blackham also knocked down several attempts to keep his team in the game and gave the Hawks a chance for a win or tie if they could just put a score on the board. Sweeper Julio Tapia was also instrumental in keeping Juan Diego from increasing its lead.
North Sanpete is now 3-4-1 for the season, and needs to find a way to score more as it works for region victories. This year’s team has several senior and juniors with a good deal of experience, and this would be a good season for second year head coach Adam Coon to take his squad into the playoffs.
