OREM—The Manti High School Templarettes have danced their way into two third-place finishes this year, taking the bronze medal at both the region and state competitions.
At region, the Templarettes placed first in dance. But a win in dance wasn’t enough to propel them to victory, as they placed second in military and fourth in novelty. South Sevier’s dancers, the eventual state champions, and Richfield both bested Manti for first and second place overall.
At state, Manti struggled to compete against the more experienced South Sevier and Millard teams. The Templarettes came away with third-place finishes in dance and military, but they failed to place among the top five teams in novelty.
Although this year wasn’t reminiscent of Manti’s “Dancing Dynasty,” in which the Templarettes took first at state a remarkable five years in a row, a third-place finish at state this year was quite an accomplishment for this year’s team.
Manti has only two senior dancers on the team this year, and more than half of the team’s members are freshmen.
Drill team coach Hillary Withers was excited about Manti’s performance.
“We’re extremely proud of the girls,” she said.
“For a team with 10 freshman girls, they did amazing.”
And with a majority of the team returning next year, it can only be expected that the Templarettes will improve.
As a token of Manti’s tradition of excellence in dance, both senior girls, Christine Cox and Ashley Hunt, were named to the All-State Team.
