Gunnison girls fall to Millard’s hot hands

EPHRAIM—Before last Thursday’s inter-region play-in basketball game Gunnison girls basketball coach Stewart Jensen said the Bulldogs would need to do two things if they hoped to beat Millard.
“We need to rebound and take care of the ball,” he said.
Although the Lady Bulldogs did a good job on the boards, it’s hard to get a rebound when your opponents don’t miss, so the Eagles earned a 61-48 win over Gunnison.
Millard opened the game with a three-pointer and then shot a red hot 62 percent from the field to take a 20-12 lead after one quarter.
But the Bulldogs stepped up their defense in the second quarter, and held the Eagles to a meager two points while adding 10 of their own. At the half, the game was tied, 22-22.
The Bulldogs were on line to give Millard a run for their money with 11 first-half rebounds and 11 put-back points off those boards. Even though the Eagles got back on track, hitting 60 percent of their shots in the third, the Bulldogs held their own. At the end of three periods the score was 34-32 Eagles.
But that’s when Millard ran away with the game.
The Eagles opened the final quarter with a 14-1 run, taking advantage of key Gunnison turnovers to get easy buckets. Halfway through the final period the Bulldogs trailed by 13, and even though the girls from Gunnison matched the Eagles for the final four minutes of the game, with each team scoring 13 additional points, the early run was too much to overcome.
Gunnison finished the game shooting 34 percent from the field compared to 50 percent by the Eagles. The Bulldogs pulled down 19 first-half rebounds, but Millard only missed 8-of-20 shots in the second half. As a result Gunnison only got four defensive boards in the final two periods of play.
The quick Eagles made it difficult for the Bulldogs to “take care of the ball,” as coach Jensen had hoped they would. Twenty-three Bulldog turnovers yielded 25 points for Millard.
Tiegan Jensen and Bailie Reynolds combined for 28 of the Bulldogs’ 48 points with 14 each. Koral Campbell added eight, and Kacey Jensen and Breann Winters scored four each. Cami Carlisle and Gentry Jensen each had two points.
The loss to Millard means that the basketball season is over for the Lady Bulldogs, who finished the year with an 8-13 record.
