GUNNISON—The 2007-08 wrestling season has been a year to regroup and rebuild for the Gunnison Bulldogs. With just two seniors and six juniors on the team, the Bulldogs have struggled to compete against the larger teams in 2A.
The Bulldogs have competed at tournaments in Enterprise, Parowan, Richfield and Manti. They also hosted a tournament and attended the 2A state duels. Most of these tournaments have yielded a fifth or sixth placing overall for the Bulldogs. Travis Yardley, a junior at 145 pounds, has done exceptionally well at these tournaments. Expect him to be a competitive force at region.
Gunnison will wrestle at Manti on Thursday, Jan. 31, before heading to region competition on Feb. 8-9. State competition will follow, Feb. 14-16.
Coach Mark Christenson says he’s “happy with the way they’ve conducted themselves. … They’re a real good group of kids.” Although this season might not be one for the record books, the Bulldogs have found success by putting hard work into every one of their matches.
