Seven girls honored with Girls State selection

The American Legion Auxiliary Manti Unit No. 31 will sponsor seven girls from Sanpete County, five from Manti High School, one from North Sanpete and one from Wasatch Academy at Utah Girls State 2008 to be held June 2-7 at Southern Utah University in Cedar City.
For 60 years the American Legion Auxiliary has given young women citizenship training. The girls who attend will work together as a self-governing body, learning about the American political process. They will participate in city, county and state elections, campaigning for election and performing the duties of that elected office.
The auxiliary selected the following girls:
Mayu Greenhalgh, a junior at Manti High School, is the daughter of Clint and Kumiko Greenhalgh of Manti. She is concertmistress of the orchestra and show choir accompanist. She also plays with the Snow College Symphony Orchestra.
Rachel Dettinger, a junior at Manti High School, is the daughter of Greg and Shelly Dettinger of Manti.

She has been involved in Manti City Council, Spanish Club, Math Club, FBLA, girls tennis, girls basketball, cheerleading and the drill team. Through it all she has maintained a 4.0 GPA while taking several college classes.
Naomi Young, a junior at Manti High School, is the daughter of Robert and Wynn Young of Sterling. She enjoys music and loves to write. She is on the honor roll and maintains a 3.8 GPA.
Ann Young, a junior at Manti High School, is the daughter of Robert and Wynn Young of Sterling. She enjoys playing the piano and violin. She is enrolled in college calculus and advanced physics. She is on the honor roll and maintains a 3.9 GPA.
Lisa Bishop, a junior at Manti High School, is the daughter of Lynn and Laurie Bishop. She enjoys playing the piano and volunteering at the Manti Elementary School. She is enrolled in calculus and physics and is on the honor roll.
Laura Christensen, a junior at North Sanpete High School, is the daughter of Kent and Tammy Christensen of Moroni. She is active in FFA, FBLA and the National Honors Society. She has been involved with 4-H.
Rebecca Cottam, a junior at Wasatch Academy, is the daughter of Mark and Miriam Cottem of Wales. She is a straight-A student and is serving as the Student Council secretary. She is also a student ambassador and is on the soccer and track teams.
