Snow’s ‘Little Women’ brings new twist to classic story
2-13-08
EPHRAIM—The Snow College theater department is bringing a new twist on an old classic to the stage.
From cherished book to admired play and now musical hit, “Little Women” the musical, will entertain audiences at the Eccles Center for Performing Arts Feb. 21-23, 28-29, and March 1 at 8 p.m.
Ticket prices are $7 for adults and $6.50 for seniors and students. To purchase tickets, call 283-7478.
The musical is “something new based on old familiar stories,” director Kim Christison said. “I think it will be well received because the audience is familiar with it, and it follows the story faithfully.”
The musical is based on the original “Little Women” novel by Louisa May Alcott and includes music by Jason Howland and lyrics by Mindi Dickstein. The Snow College Orchestra will be performing the music. Christison said the musical orchestration is appealing, the play itself visually impressive, and, combined with set and lighting, it all brings a rich dimension to the stage.
Christison and musical director Kathleen Hansen have worked hard to put together a strong cast. Out of 45 students who tried out, 15 are able to participate in the final performances.
“What I hope is that this play captures the time, the people, and the values of the story on which it is based,” Christison said.
Jessica Jane Hagemeister, who plays Amy March and the troll, said the musical version of “Little Women” captures the feeling of the play even more. “The songs Marmee sings portrays emotions so much deeper. … You feel so much more.”
With a story set during the Civil War, Hagemeister says it is important to portray it well so the audience can leave with a greater appreciation of the lifestyles people had then. She also said it is a fun show, but can lead you to reflect on those hard times. It is a play for all ages.
“It’s going to be fantastic. No less than fantastic,” Hagemeister said.
