MANTI—Long time vice president and branch manager of Manti’s Zions Bank, Kim Anderson, has retired due to health reasons.
Anderson recently had some serious medical conditions arise that resulted in an open-heart surgery.
While recovering from the surgery, Anderson said, he took time to evaluate what had caused him to come to that point, and he decided he needed to re-prioritize his life.
Part of that self-assessment led Anderson to decide to retire from Zions Bank. He said he enjoyed the past 30 years he spent working there and he loved working with his staff and customers, but banking is a high-stress job, and he did not want to deal with the position any longer.
Anderson was born and raised in Gunnison and came to Zions Bank in Manti in 1977.
At that time he said it was a small city bank called First State Bank and had assets of $9 million. Shortly after he started working there Zions came in and bought the small branch.
Zions changed the focus of the branch from just Manti to serving people throughout Sanpete County and eventually even outside of Sanpete County.
As the bank grew, so did its assets, said Anderson. The bank now has $50 million in assets.
Besides the client base growing the technology in the branch had changed a lot while he was there, Anderson said.
In 1977 the bank did not even have a copy machine; everything was done on carbon paper.
As the years went by and changes took place Anderson said it brought with it many interesting and challenging times, but overall it was a good experience.
He said he particularly enjoys looking back and contemplating the time Zions Bank almost merged with First Security. He says it’s almost funny how far the merger talk got before it was called off.
Anderson’s coworkers at Zions Bank said they would miss him. Over the years, they said, the branch’s staff had become like a family, and it’s “just weird” to think of Anderson not being there anymore.
Since his retirement Anderson said he is looking at other options to pursue. Those options do not exclude areas in banking, but he said he would not take up a similar position to the one he just left. He says he hopes to be able to remain in Manti.
